When a family pet goes missing, it can be a heart-wrenching experience. This was the case for Jeff Bohnert, whose dog Abby disappeared one summer day. Fortunately, this story has a happy ending, proving that hope and perseverance can lead to unexpected miracles.
It all began one morning when Jeff noticed his dog Abby was missing. He had taken her and his other dog, Summer, out to play the previous day, but only Summer returned home. Immediately concerned, Jeff suspected the hot weather might have caused Abby, a thirteen-year-old dog, to stray. Despite Jeff and his wife Kathy’s efforts to search the neighborhood and share Abby’s photo on social media, weeks passed without any sign of her, leaving them to slowly lose hope.

Fast forward to August 6, 2022, a group of cavers from the Cave Research Foundation were exploring the Moore Cave System in Missouri. Among them was lead caver Frank Keene, guiding about 30 participants including five children. As they were working, a young boy made a remarkable discovery. “Daddy, there’s a puppy!” he shouted, prompting the adults to investigate. At the bottom of a 12-foot pit, they found a dog, frail and motionless.
Necessity being the mother of invention, Frank Keene and fellow caver Rick Haley took immediate steps to rescue the weak dog. Frank took a photo of the animal and went outside the cave to seek assistance for what would be a challenging vertical rescue. Enlisting help, he contacted Rob Calhoun, the assistant Fire Chief, to help locate the dog’s owner. Meanwhile, within the cave, the exploration team formulated a rescue plan.

Abby, unable to walk due to exhaustion, was carefully coaxed into a duffle bag lined with a soft blanket. The cozy setup helped soothe her as the team began the careful task of lifting her through the narrow cave opening. In a relay-like fashion, the rescuers took turns handing the her upwards, a painstaking process that took 90 minutes.
Once Abby reached daylight, she was reunited with her grateful owner, Jeff Bohnert, who was overcome with emotion upon seeing his long-lost companion. Abby, who had been missing for nearly three months, was finally home. Her joyful return also touched the heart of Rachel Bohnert, Jeff’s daughter, who was away at college and thrilled by the news.

A week after the rescue, Rick Haley ran into the family again and observed Abby’s improvements. Though still recovering and underweight, Abby had regained enough strength to bark. “She’ll be okay,” Haley remarked, beaming with pride.
In the end, this story highlights the power of hope and community in overcoming daunting challenges, showing that miracles can happen when least expected.
