When you walk into an animal shelter, you often see dogs eagerly peering out of their kennels, hoping for a bit of attention. Yet, behind those curious eyes, some dogs silently endure deep fear. This isn’t because they lack charm or the ability to love, but because their past experiences have left them feeling trapped by fear.
A recent story that stirred emotions online involved a dog named Chey from a Florida shelter. Chey was too scared to leave her kennel, and the story of why is both heart-wrenching and reminiscent of the trauma she suffered.

The team at Orange County Animal Services in Florida shared a moving video on social media, featuring Chey, a street-rescued dog, who was too traumatized to step out of her kennel. Instead of joyfully bounding out when the door was opened, Chey cowered to the floor.
Her caregivers believe the dog has lived through some serious hardships, although the exact cause of her fear remains unknown. Chey was brought to the shelter after a local resident found her wandering around the neighborhood. At that time, her paw pads were severely injured, making it difficult for her to walk.
The Florida shelter explained in a post, “Her paw pads were so badly injured that it seemed they had been burned off. She could barely walk.” Since her arrival, Chey has continued to struggle with her trauma, remaining fearful of people, unfamiliar places, and even physical touch. Volunteers have had to carry her to the yard, as she won’t walk on her own.

Thankfully, Chey has been surrounded by love from the shelter staff. However, the shelter environment isn’t ideal for her emotional recovery. “While her paws have healed, her heart hasn’t. The longer she’s here, the more withdrawn she becomes,” the shelter mentioned.
In a positive turn of events, Chey has been moved by a private rescue group to a quieter setting, where she is beginning to experience life in a home environment. Though she has a long journey ahead before being ready for adoption, there’s hope that beneath her fears lies a sweet dog ready for a brighter future.
Savanna Palmer, a dog behaviorist at the shelter, noted Chey’s potential for growth. She shared in the comments, “Chey has been socialized with other dogs since her arrival. With the right person who can see her potential and give her the time she needs, she can truly blossom.”

For now, Chey will continue her recovery in rescue care. Once her healing is complete, she will be looking for a forever home, hopefully with someone who understands her and can provide the loving environment she deserves.
We wish Chey all the best on her journey to find happiness!
