Shepherd the dog faced severe adversity. Critically malnourished, severely dehydrated, and suffering from mange, he lay helpless for nearly 12 hours, his organs beginning to fail.
The Humane Rescue Alliance stepped in, rushing Shepherd to a nearby hospital. His condition was dire, and he frequently collapsed, leaving little hope for recovery.
Miraculously, Shepherd survived the first crucial week of treatment, slowly beginning to recover and show signs of life. Currently, he is under the loving care of Kim O’Keefe in Burke, Virginia, where he continues to heal.
Kim, moved by his story, is both saddened by his past and inspired by his resilience. She expressed her disbelief, saying, “It’s unthinkable that someone could leave a dog like this to suffer, but he’s full of love and trust, even after all he’s been through.”
Although Shepherd is not yet ready for adoption, his daily progress is promising. His recovery is a testament to his remarkable strength.
The Humane Rescue Alliance is collaborating with authorities to identify the individual who abandoned Shepherd so close to a shelter that could have saved him sooner.
