It’s hard to comprehend how some pets, especially those who have devoted their lives to their owners, can be discarded without care. Figgy, an 18-year-old Toy Poodle, serves as a poignant example of this unfortunate reality.
Brought into a California veterinary clinic, Figgy was expected to be there for a routine checkup due to his age and appearance. Instead, his owners requested his euthanasia.

Although Figgy was blind, toothless, and frail, he exuded calmness and sweetness despite his age.
The clinic staff was shocked by the owners’ justification for putting him down—they called him “stupid.” After almost two decades with his family, Figgy was abandoned with heartbreaking indifference.
The staff refused to comply with this request, determined to provide Figgy with the care he deserved.

Upon examination, it was clear that Figgy’s struggles were typical for an elderly dog.
While he had arthritis and other age-related concerns, his condition was stable, and he wasn’t suffering from any major health issues that warranted euthanasia. What he needed was care, understanding, and a safe home.
The clinic reached out to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, an organization dedicated to older dogs, who agreed to take him in immediately.
Sherri Franklin, the founder of Muttville, chose to foster Figgy herself to provide the nurturing environment he needed.

“He was a total love bug and slept with me curled up in my armpit. I just loved him,” Franklin shared with The Dodo.
Despite his past, Figgy remained trusting and affectionate, seeking love and responding with gratitude to the kindness shown to him. It took just four days for Figgy’s story to capture hearts online and connect him with his new family.
Eileen, experienced in caring for hospice dogs, was moved by his story and welcomed him into her home. To Eileen, Figgy wasn’t “stupid.” He was special. “He’ll be our fifth hospice angel,” she told The Dodo.

Under Eileen’s care, Figgy found what he had long missed: security, warmth, and love.
“These precious angels gave their love and loyalty their whole lives and didn’t deserve to die alone in a shelter,” Eileen reflected. “I knew I could provide them the love, comfort, and security they deserved.”
Now, Figgy spends his days enveloped in the kindness and affection he always deserved, making his final years a testament to the nurturing care of those who see the value in every life.
