In Houston, Texas, a heartwarming story unfolded when a stray dog named Clive found an unexpected ally in Caleb Schaffer, an elementary school teacher.
Every morning, on his way to work, Schaffer was greeted by the sight of a hopeful dog waiting by the school entrance. One particular morning, the dog’s eager tail wag caught Schaffer’s attention just as he was about to start his day. Although pressed for time, the encounter left a lasting impression.
Recalling the moment, Schaffer told The Dodo, “He was sitting right outside the main door, and his tail started thumping when he saw me.” This innocent encounter set the stage for a series of events that would transform the dog’s life.
Once Schaffer’s classes ended, he returned to the entrance, but the dog was gone, frightened away by animal shelter workers attempting to capture him. Undeterred, the loyal dog showed up again the next morning, maintaining his routine.
By the third day, Schaffer resolved to help the visibly struggling animal, noticing its deteriorating skin and undernourished state. He gently coaxed the dog into his car, took him home, and asked his wife to care for him while he was at work.
That evening, Schaffer reached out to various rescue groups but found they were all full. Determined to do something, he visited a local animal shelter to provide the dog with essential veterinary care and a much-needed bath. “I figured some basic vet care at the shelter was better than nothing. He was really suffering,” Schaffer explained.
Naming him Clive, Schaffer shared his story on Facebook, where it quickly caught the attention of Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption. They arranged for Clive to enter a foster home, giving him a fresh start.
In the classroom, Schaffer shared Clive’s journey with his students, shedding light on crucial issues such as the treatment of stray animals and the importance of spaying, neutering, and heartworm prevention. “There are so many strays everywhere here. It’s given me an opportunity to talk about… the reality of shelters,” Schaffer remarked.
While Clive awaits adoption, his story remains an inspiring example of kindness. Clive is now a well-cared-for and happy dog, enjoying the compassion and warmth he longed for.
