Yesterday, a heroic animal rescuer named Demi managed to save two malnourished dogs from a notorious dump site, with assistance from Rescue Paws Curaçao. Demi shared the heartwarming story of her rescue mission.
“My day began like any other: getting up and preparing for work. On my commute, I passed a well-known spot infamous for abandoned dogs, both alive and deceased. This is where my own pet came from, and just last week, I found two puppies, Milli and Mia, there. I routinely feed the dog packs that inhabit the area, often seeing familiar faces, including a woman I recognize,” Demi recounted.

As she stopped by a feeding area, expecting to find the usual dogs, Demi noticed something unusual. Getting out of her car, she discovered two extremely thin dogs next to a pile of bones. Clearly, they had been abandoned recently, as Demi hadn’t seen them just the previous evening.
Heartbreakingly, one dog appeared too weak to move, and a chain was tightly wrapped around its neck. After removing the chain, Demi provided water and food, which they accepted with evident hunger. Though she needed to head to work, her mind was occupied with thoughts of the dogs, fearing someone else might find them and overlook their desperate need for help. These dogs, Demi noted, reminded her of Finn and Kay, two other malnourished dogs she had helped, with Kay also found wearing a tight necklace.

After anxiously waiting through a few hours at work, permission was granted for Demi to go fetch the dogs. Without hesitation, she raced back, and fortunately, they remained in the area. She swiftly transported them to the vet, seeking honest advice about their condition, acknowledging her limitations in handling severely ill animals. The vet assessed their condition, diagnosing them with Carpathian disease and extreme malnutrition, but expressed confidence in their recovery. The vet administered medication and scheduled additional shots for the following day, as the dogs’ stomachs couldn’t handle oral medicine. For now, their diet involves small servings of chicken and rice multiple times daily, with hopes for improvement within a week.
Despite their fragile health—barely weighing nine pounds each, akin to a 15-week-old puppy—the dogs are safe under the care of Rescue Paws Curaçao. The team is committed to doing everything possible to aid in their recovery and is hopeful for a positive outcome.
