In a remarkable tale of heroism, Kuno, a dedicated and courageous military dog, has earned the prestigious Dickin Medal for his extraordinary bravery in saving British soldiers during an al-Qaeda attack. This award, presented by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), is given to animals for acts of courage beyond the call of duty. Kuno’s actions exemplify exceptional valor, and according to British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, he is indeed worthy of such distinction.

Kuno, whose service record already included several successful missions, faced his most critical challenge when British troops were unexpectedly surrounded by machine-gun-wielding attackers. Determined to assist his pinned-down human companions, especially when soldier Sherrain Reber was immobilized by heavy fire, Kuno fearlessly charged through a storm of bullets to thwart the attackers’ plans. Despite the perilous situation, he successfully disrupted the assault, though he sustained severe injuries in the process.

As a result of the incident, Kuno was transported to the US Army Veterinary Treatment Facility for critical care. The operation to save his legs required the amputation of one of his paws. He now wears a prosthetic leg—the first-ever for a UK Military Working Dog—and a brace to help him move. Following his retirement from service in 2016, Kuno was adopted by a loving family, allowing him the chance to enjoy a peaceful life in a caring home.
