On May 14, a significant milestone was reached as three senior orphan elephants—Kelelari, Karisa, and Dupotto—embarked on a transformative journey from our Nursery to the Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo.
The careful planning behind this transition considered several factors, including the orphans’ development beyond the Nursery and the abundant rainfall in Tsavo.

Unlike the dry landscapes of Voi and Southern Tsavo East, Ithumba in the north experienced an unexpected surge of rain, resulting in plentiful food and filled waterholes.
The loading process began at 3:00 am, proceeding smoothly as the elephants, accompanied by their Keepers and a film crew documenting the journey, boarded a custom-designed truck tailored for elephant transportation.

Departing from Nairobi National Park before sunrise, the convoy navigated through deserted roads to ensure a smooth journey for the orphans.
Throughout the voyage, the elephants demonstrated remarkable trust in their human caretakers, peacefully munching on freshly cut greens provided in the truck. Their calm demeanor amid the changes became evident as they approached their new habitat.
Upon arrival in Tsavo, a significant phase unfolded as the orphans began interacting with wild elephants, marking the gradual transition towards a fully wild existence.

Similar to human children on the path to independence, this journey advanced at the individual pace of each orphan, influenced by their unique backgrounds.
Despite challenging road conditions caused by rain, the truck skillfully navigated, arriving at Ithumba earlier than expected.
As the gates swung open, the orphans stepped out, initially unsure of their surroundings but soon comforted by the sight of familiar milk bottles.

With the Nairobi Keepers leading the way, they mingled with other dependent orphans, finding comfort in the company of their peers.
Kelelari adjusted effortlessly, Karisa showed signs of settling in, and Dupotto happily reunited with old friends, her joy evident.
The day unfolded seamlessly, and the orphans luxuriated in a mud bath amidst sweltering temperatures.

Kelelari reveled in the mud, with Karisa and Dupotto finding solace by his side alongside their Nairobi Keepers.
As the day drew to a close, a tranquil evening greeted the orphans as they entered their night enclosures, beginning a fresh journey in savoring the beauty of Ithumba after plentiful rains.
