Roger Massey was on a mission to save a young Pit Bull struggling to survive alone in the woods. Even knowing the challenges ahead, Roger couldn’t turn a blind eye to this pup in need.
For nearly three weeks, Roger tirelessly supported the dog by providing food and water every day. Despite reaching out to various animal rescue organizations, he found help hard to come by.

The Pit Bull, whom Roger later named Pappas, was nervous and suspicious of human intentions due to past experiences of abuse and neglect. This didn’t deter Roger, who remained dedicated to gaining the frightened dog’s trust.
Roger shared his experiences on social media, saying, “I take him food and water, but he will not let me get close to him.” He added that Pappas was comfortable around Roger’s own dogs but kept his distance from humans. Pappas, tragically, only had three legs, further evidence of his difficult past.

Roger’s perseverance ultimately paid off when Saving Hope Animal Rescue answered his request for help. Volunteers from the rescue arrived, and Pappas appeared to sense a change was coming as they gently slipped a leash over his head. Exhausted and ready for help, he did not resist.
Once whisked away by the rescuers, Pappas’s defensive nature began to melt away, uncovering a lovable dog with a heart full of yearning for connection. “He has the most soulful eyes and snuggles and wants to follow his human everywhere,” shared Lauren Anton, executive director of Saving Hope Animal Rescue, in an interview with The Dodo.

At the rescue center, Pappas underwent a comprehensive health examination, revealing severe arthritis and a positive test for heartworm. He was promptly placed on medication and given joint supplements, beginning his path to recovery. Despite these health hurdles, Pappas’s spirit remained unbroken.
Soon, Pappas found solace in a nurturing foster home where he started to experience the care and affection he had been missing. This courageous little dog, having endured so much, was finally on the journey to discover the love and security that comes with finding a forever family.
