A year ago in Ontario, Canada, a deeply distressing situation unfolded involving a dog left helpless in a deserted area near a tire shop. Her paws and muzzle were bound tightly with electrical tape, causing her immense pain and difficulty breathing. Though her life seemed to hang by a thread, luck was on her side when she was found just in time (HV).
The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society responded quickly to save this dog, later named Justice. She was in critical condition and needed urgent medical attention. The dedicated rescue team worked relentlessly to stabilize her, and the tale of her neglect soon emerged.

Justice’s former owner, citing an allergy in his granddaughter, decided to put down the 7-year-old dog rather than find her a new home. Instead, he passed her to a friend, Michael Hill, along with $60 intended for her euthanasia.
However, Hill had other plans. Instead of taking her to a shelter, he cruelly left her to suffer alone, wrapped in electrical tape. This heartless act outraged the local community and led to swift legal consequences. In February, Michael Hill was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by three years of probation. He was also banned from owning or interacting with animals for 25 years. In Ontario, noted for its stringent animal cruelty laws, many saw this as an appropriate response.

At the vet’s office, Justice’s condition was dire. She could hardly breathe or walk, and the remnants of the tape left a lasting scar on her muzzle—a stark reminder of her suffering. Through months of dedicated treatment and rehabilitation, Justice gradually regained her health.
By June 2024, Justice embarked on a hopeful new chapter, becoming part of a caring family who provided the affection and security she sorely needed. Despite her traumatic past, she found joy and peace in her new home, full of love and safety.

To commemorate her journey and highlight the fight against animal cruelty, the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society introduced a special fundraising effort. They produced plush toys modeled after Justice, each featuring a symbolic white scar on the face. These toys are sold for $30, with proceeds aiding the rescue and recovery of abused animals.
Justice’s tale is a compelling reminder of the harsh realities some animals endure, yet it also showcases the resilience and recovery possible with the right care. Her journey from the brink of death to a loving home is a testament to the healing power of compassion.

May her story encourage us all to combat animal cruelty and support those dedicated to protecting and saving animals in need. Together, we can profoundly impact the lives of those most vulnerable.
