In late August 2022, a compassionate individual noticed a dog in distress on a street and reached out to a local animal shelter for assistance.
The Stray Rescue of St. Louis responded promptly, providing much-needed help to the struggling dog.
Donna Lochmann, a member of the Stray Rescue of St. Louis, received a call about a dog spotted sleeping on the pavement under the intense summer sun. Photos sent by the caller revealed the dog’s visible hip bones, a clear sign of severe malnutrition.
Realizing the urgency of the situation, Donna was determined to intervene. “The picture this person sent us showed the dog lying down. It was hard to tell, but it kind of looked like you could see his hip bones. So I knew it was definitely worth checking out,” she told The Dodo.
Upon arriving at the location, Donna had difficulty locating the dog at first. However, after some searching, she discovered him resting in a puddle of gutter water, attempting to escape the heat.
As Donna approached, the dog barely raised his head before laying it back down, seemingly defeated by his circumstances. Moved by his plight, Donna was resolute in her decision to rescue him.
The dog, later named Curby, was gentle and unafraid, allowing Donna to help him into her car. He quickly settled onto a blanket, relieved to be in the cool air of the vehicle.
Curby was content during the drive to the shelter.
Following a comprehensive health check, Curby was placed in a foster home with a caring family inspired by his story. In this nurturing environment, Curby began to flourish, gaining weight and enjoying playtime with a new canine companion.
While it is uncertain if Curby has found a permanent family yet, his lovable and playful nature suggests it is only a matter of time before he secures a forever home.
