Responders initially arrived expecting to handle an “aggressive” Pitbull but were met with a completely different and heartbreaking sight. Instead of a threatening dog, they discovered Halo, a blind and extremely emaciated pup who had been subjected to severe neglect. Without the timely intervention, Halo’s future looked bleak.
In Mississippi’s rescue circles, Stacey and her husband Mike are well-known for their unwavering commitment to helping dogs in distress. Through the Lucky Dog Refuge in Stamford, Connecticut, countless dogs have benefitted from their dedication, including Halo.
The couple found Halo in the woods, so frail she was little more than skin and bones. With gentle care, they enticed her out of hiding using food, recognizing she had endured significant hardship. It seemed she had been used for breeding until she was no longer considered valuable. Rather than care, she faced abandonment and neglect, as shared by Stacey Frazier in a heartfelt Facebook post: “Her ears were crudely cut, and she appeared to be used for breeding. She suffers from an eye injury, and unfortunately, one eye is completely blind, likely due to an untreated condition.”
Though her past hardships were heart-wrenching to consider, Halo was finally receiving the compassion she needed. The name Halo reflected her fragile condition, as her survival was uncertain. But she defied the odds. Under Stacey’s vigilant care, Halo began receiving the required medical treatment and nourishment essential for her recovery.
Recovery was a battle, and at times, it seemed Halo might not pull through. As noted in a video shared by Jessica, “We were uncertain about her level of vision until confirmed by a doctor. While she might see shadows, she sometimes bumps into things like telephone poles.” This marked a new chapter in Halo’s life filled with the kindness she had never experienced before.
After months of care, Halo grew strong enough to begin the next leg of her journey: relocating to Connecticut and starting anew at Lucky Dog Refuge. The transformation was remarkable. The terrified, malnourished dog from the woods was gone, replaced by a joyful and upbeat companion. Notably, Halo developed a fondness for ice cream, with each treat bringing her pure joy. As Jessica recounted, “She reminds us daily of her gratitude for her new life. She truly is an angel.”
However, despite her newfound joy, Halo’s life was still missing one vital piece: a forever home. That missing piece fell perfectly into place when she found her ideal family, who didn’t just adopt Halo but also Layne, her best friend from the shelter. Now, the duo lives happily together, a testament to their journey from hardship to joy.
